This piece was never going to have a perfectly predictable pattern.
That is part of what I love about putting two clays together.
Each begins with its own color and character, and then somewhere along the way the two begin to move into one another. A line disappears. Another becomes more noticeable. One color takes over for a while before the other finds its way back through.
By the time this platter was formed, there was no longer a clear place where one ended and the other began.
And that made me think about all the times two separate paths come together.
Two people. Two families. Two ideas. Sometimes even two completely different versions of the life we thought we'd have.
Neither path disappears simply because another one joins it.
They change each other.
Parts remain distinct, other parts become so intertwined that separating them would be impossible, and together they create something neither could have become on its own.
Maybe that is what makes meeting somewhere along the way so meaningful.
We bring everything that came before with us, and from that point forward, neither path is quite the same.
