How to Create an Organizational Chart in Excel

Step 1: Open Excel and Create a New Worksheet

  • Open Microsoft Excel.

  • Create a new worksheet by clicking on File > New > Blank Workbook.

Step 2: Insert a SmartArt Graphic

  • Go to the Insert tab on the Ribbon.

  • Click on SmartArt in the Illustrations group.

  • In the Choose a SmartArt Graphic dialog box, select Hierarchy from the list on the left.

  • Choose the Organization Chart layout and click OK.

Step 3: Enter Text into the Organization Chart

  • Click on the first box in the SmartArt graphic and enter the name of the top position in your organization (e.g., CEO).

  • Click on the next box and enter the name of the next position in the hierarchy.

  • Continue this process until all positions are entered.

Step 4: Add or Remove Shapes

  • To add a shape, click on the existing shape closest to where you want to add the new shape.

  • Go to the SmartArt Tools Design tab.

  • Click on Add Shape in the Create Graphic group.

  • Choose where you want to add the shape (e.g., Add Shape After, Add Shape Before, Add Shape Above, Add Shape Below).

  • To remove a shape, click on the shape you want to remove and press the Delete key.

Step 5: Customize the Organization Chart

  • Use the SmartArt Tools Design and Format tabs to customize the appearance of your chart.

  • Change colors by clicking on Change Colors in the SmartArt Styles group.

  • Apply different SmartArt styles by selecting a style from the gallery.

Step 6: Save Your Work

  • Save your organizational chart by clicking on File > Save As.

  • Choose a location to save your file, enter a file name, and click Save.
